PBBRC in the News

News of Steve Jones becoming our first honorary member has made the pages of the August 24th issue of Athletics Weekly. We have also been featured in the Gwent Gazette (view article) and on the Welsh Athletics website.

Lauren Cooper – LiRF

Congratulations to Lauren Cooper who is the latest Member to complete the Leadership in Running Fitness Course.

Damian Williams – “We now have a good blend of youth and experience amongst our Leaders which can only bode well for the future.”

Track Session

Another successful track session was held in Brynmawr School on Monday with a plenty of members attending including Steve Mathers, Richard Price, Sam Jackson, Beth Jones, Damian Williams, Alex Thomas, Marc Bloomfield, Neil Beynon, Darren Kippest, Nathan Harper, Hannah Williams and James Ashley.

Judging by the feedback it looked as though everyone enjoyed themselves:-

  • You were awfully mean to us! Enjoyed it however much I moaned.
  • 10 x 500 meters on the track ????????????
  • Thanks for leading tonight Damian I think I enjoyed it ????????
  • Hard work but good fun!

Keri and Terry’s Mountain Jaunt

Keri Young and Terry Watkins were representing the Green Army whilst on a trip to Brean Down on Tuesday. The photo has been added to Vests on Tour!

Birthday Track Session

Gary Bartram celebrated his birthday on Tuesday with a session around the track in Brecon with his wife.

Louise Kirby Selected for East Wales

Congratulations to Louise Kirby who was selected to represent East Wales in Brecon on Saturday. She was selected to run the 100m and 200m and joined Hayley Jackson, Stephen Mathers and Lauren Cooper.

Up the Domen

Lee Phillips led Caroline Matthews and Sean Thomasson for a run up the Domen on Thursday night with Bryony Brown and Jo Morris joing them.

Julie’s Silver Medal

Julie Cashell received some awesome bling in the post this week. It was her silver medal for the coming 2nd female in the recent Welsh Mountain Running Championships in north Wales. It’s great to see Julie back on form.

parkrun

There was one PB to report at PBB with Andrew Gunter finishing in 19:37. James Williams was running at Merthyr parkrun, Lee Griffiths was in Newport, Sam Lewis and Sian Price were in Stonehouse, Sian McGoldrick was in Pontypridd, Danielle Phillips was in Pontypool and Dave Kempton was lured to Barry Island with the promise of the BEST bacon rolls at any parkrun.

19th Welsh Athletics Inter Regional Championships

Four club members were selected to compete in East Wales vests in the Welsh Athletics Inter Regional Championships. Louise Kirby competed in the 100m and 200m, Hayley Jackson competed in the 3,000m (and was roped into the 800m), Lauren Cooper competed in the 3,000m, 1,500m Steeplechase and Stephen Mathers competed in the 800m.

Lauren took gold in the 3,000m and silver in the steeplechase. You can view the full results here.

The Himalaya AllDayer

I spent my Saturday/Sunday scaling Machen Mountain for Ty Hafan. It was organised by Machen Rugby Club and they only required people to run one or two laps and did mention that people could run as many as they wanted to if they wanted. I don’t think they considered that an idiot would have a go at seeing how many they could run.

I managed to complete 10 laps which equated to 32 miles and 10,000ft of elevation gain. After the 10th lap my legs were well and truly shot!

Sam’s Weekend of Bling

Sam Standerwick travelled to Blandford Forum in Dorset for the East Farm Frolic organised by White Star Running. Sam was in search of more bling but also some good mileage. She participated in the Half Marathon and 10K on the Saturday, the 12 hour ‘run as many lap as you can’ frolic on the Sunday and has the ‘Chaos’ to look forward to on Bank Holiday Monday.

Severn Bridge 10K & Half Marathon

It was a cracking turnout for the annual Severn Bridge Half Marathon and it was a hot one! Our superstar Jamie Parry finished in 8th position in a time of 01:19:30 and based on the heat and terrain you do wonder what his potential is on a flat course.

Damian Williams and Julie Cashell were both third in their category positions and Bobbie Swift was so close to sub 2 hour finishing in 02:00:12. It was also Brian Evans’ and Darren Kippest’s first ever half marathon.

Ruth Butterfield participated in the 10K and finished in 52:14 – a PB by 5 minutes! If Ruth can get a 5 minute PB on a course like that, she’s bound to be able to do even better on a flatter course.

Butetown Mile

Sam and Hayley Jackson (and Harry too) along with Keri Jones were participating in the Butetown Mile on Sunday and I was in the area so hobbled over to watch them start the mile race.  Sam and Keri ran in the elite race and Hayley and Harry ran in the ‘fun run’, although that’s more of a catchall name for everyone other than elite.

Narberth Nobbler

Rachel and Tony Lewis travelled to Narberth, Pembrokeshire on Sunday for the Narberth Nobbler series of races. The very well-priced (£10/£16/£20) trail series features a 10K, Half and Full Marathon.

Rachel excelled as she always does and came away with second female!

Sunday Long Runs

Mike Williams’ Big Pit Bimble

Despite many people running the Severn Bridge Half Marathon and 10K, Mike Williams still took a group out for a 12-mile long run to Big Pit.

After Mike’s run, Claire tagged on a few extra miles to get in a long training run.

Vest on Tour

Alison Holton is currently on holiday in New York and she’s taken her vest with her so that she can be added to the Vests on Tour page. Be like Alison and pack your vest before anything else!

Upcoming Races

Great Bristol Half Marathon

Kathryn Price has received her number for the upcoming Great Bristol Half Marathon. The race takes place on September 17th.

Swansea and Cardiff 10K

Other members have been receiving their numbers for the Cardiff 10K (September 3rd) and Swansea 10K (September 24th) although not everyone can remember signing up! (Caroline and Kim ;))

New Kit

Seems like a number of members (myself included) received new Stanno Forza tops this week. These have quickly become the defacto uniform for the club and looking forward to giving my top it’s first wearing on the weekend.

The Week Ahead

Bank Holiday Monday sees the return of the annual Machen Mountain Race. Organised by San Domenico RC, the 4.7 mile race features 1,200ft of ascent and starts at 1500.

The weekend features two races that many club members will be attending – the Cardiff 10K and the historic Roman Run. Also taking place is the first Aberbeeg 5K race organised by Islwyn RC.

The Cardiff 10K is full but you can enter the other races on the day.
