Weekly Roundup, October 4th

  • October 4, 2020

Way back in November 2019 during a GLCL XC race (what’s one of those?), a draw was held for 3 club places in the Virgin Money London Marathon 2020. The three lucky winners were Huw Steadman, Suzie Tew and Bobbie Swift. Training for the race soon began but Covid-19 happened and as the country went into lockdown the race was pushed back to October 4th.

Race after race was cancelled including those that had been rescheduled for the same time as the London Marathon. The organisers held on for as long as possible in the hope that a miracle would happen and they could hold the race but inevitably the race was cancelled for everyone apart from the elites. Instead, every had the option to run the race virtually on the same day, and that’s what Huw, Suzie and Bobbie did along with some other club members.

Despite the bad weather the support for all those that run was outstanding and makes you proud to be part of the Green Army!

Huw and Bobbie

Huw and Bobbie were joined by Gethin for the 8am start from Parc Bryn Bach and would head through Cwm, Aberbeeg, Blaina, Rhyd Y Blew and finish back at Parc Bryn Bach. Along the way club members joined in to offer them support and encouragement and by the time they returned to the Parc there was quite a crowd to welcome them home.

And for those that could support due to local lockdowns, regular updates and photos were being posted by members so we could all follow them.

Thnaks to Adrian Markey who was at the start and finish capturing the runners and supporters.

Suzie

Suzie’s route started at Govilon and then headed through Gilwen, Glangrwyney, Crickhowel, Llangynidr, Talybont on Usk and then back along the same route to the finish in Gilwern. Along the way Suzie was supported by Ruth Carter through Glangrwyney, Sarah Jeremiah from Crickhowel, Sam and Sian and their double buggy through Llangynidr and for the entire 26.2 miles by her wingman Steve Carter.

Grace

Grace’s route started in Six Bells onto Brynmawr, then to Parc Bryn Bach to do a few laps of the lake and back to Sixbells. Like the others running their virtual marathons, Grace was supported the whole way.

Kathy

Kathy Collins’ route took her from near Pontsticill along through Taff Trail down through Merthyr (via a couple of loops in Cyfarthfa Park) and finishing near Aberfan.

Sharon

A big congratulations to Sharon Woods who secured a good for age time.

Helen

Helen William’s route started in Blaenavon and then headed down to Pontypool and onto Cwmbran and finishing in Llanyrafon Park. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any photos of Helen.
