Honorary Members

Steve Jones

Steve, a former World marathon record holder and former British record holder, which stood for 32 years, was born in Tredegar and raised in Ebbw Vale. He has won numerous international races including 4 Major marathon wins, twice at Chicago, 1984 (breaking the World Record and whilst still serving in the RAF) and 1985, London 1985 and New York in 1988. Steve was also the Welsh Sports Personality of the Year in 1985.

Now based in Colorado, Steve frequently visits the UK for major race commitments but always takes time out to support the local parkrun which is managed by Parc Bryn Bach Running Club and also regularly follows the Clubs news with interest. The running club were delighted that Steve accepted the Membership and look forward to his future visits.

Steve commented:-

“I regard this Honorary Club Membership as something to treasure and belongs amongst the major achievements in my running career. I am especially proud to be recognised and welcomed into PBBRC given my local connection to Hilltop, Ebbw Vale and Tredegar”.

Club Chairman Damian Williams:-

“The idea to include special honorary members was raised and we saw Steve as the outstanding athlete, worthy of becoming our very first Honorary Member. Steve’s contribution to running locally, nationally and internationally has been remarkable and we are privileged that he accepted our invitation. Another committee member, Lee Aherne, has also actively campaigned locally to try and get Steve honoured in some shape or form but has been unsuccessful so we thought that if Steve wasn’t going to be recognised locally, our Club should at the very least do something”.
