Phillip ‘Milo’ Miles

My running career started sporadically in 1979 while still playing rugby for Tredegar. I used to run just three to five miles twice per week as well as rugby training – before packing up the rugby in 1981.

I joined the newly formed Club 69 in that year and have stayed ever since, running my first half marathon in Aberdare that summer in one hour twenty one mins. I quickly became very interested in coaching after failing to break three hours for the marathon four times in 1982 and 1983. Despite getting down to one hour fourteen in the Bath half – March 1983.

I attended a couple of weekends in Newport with top coach Mike Rowlands in 1984 (Newport were then the top team). I also did a couple of weekends at Cwmbran Stadium with coach Anne Hill. Anne sadly died at a young age a few years ago. Both these people gave me so much valuable information. The remainder of my knowledge comes from 30 years of making mistakes in my own training lol.

I have worked for the last nineteen years as an Exercise Practitioner for the Cardiac Rehab team based at Nevill Hall Hospital. Having the ultimate job satisfaction of helping people back to full health after serious heart problems. I retire on the 29th April from this job but I still have the ultimate job satisfaction of beasting you guys on a Thurs evening ha ha!

My main interests are music, athletics and rugby, I run five or six times a week often with our two Hungarian Viszlas. And sometimes with my wife Jacky who has had to curtail her running career due to back problems. Jacky has run three times for Wales in X Country and is still an active member of the club.

Despite slowing down each year I get enormous satisfaction and my own motivation seeing our younger and or newer members gradually improving and eventually all passing me.
