Last Week’s Leftovers

Ironman Mike

Caroline Matthews took some great shots at last weekend’s Ironman Tenby whilst supporting Mike. You can view them all here.

Katherine Meets Mo

Katherine Williams was fortunate to grab a selfie with Mo Farah on the day before the Great North Run.

This is a great shot of Laura Hire representing the Green Army at the Great North Run.

Sam’s Frolic

This is a cracking photo of Sam Standerwick on her Bad Cow Weekender. The photo sums up Sam’s approach to racing – she doesn’t go out to race, she goes out to have as much fun as possible!

Monday Track Session

It was another excellent turnout for Monday’s track session at Brynmawr School with Beth Jones, Sam Jackson, Steve Mathers, Jamie Parry, Andrew Gunter, Ian Kent, Gavin Patterson, James Ashley amongst other participating.

Gary’s First Ultra

Gary Bartram has signed up for his first ultramarathon and has chosen Race to The Stone 2018. He’s chosen the 2 day option which involves running 50K on the Saturday and 50K on the Sunday. It’ll be great having another ultra runner in the club to share training tips and experiences.

Tuesday Training

A First Strides group braved sideways rain (source: Matthew Crowle) for a training session on Tuesday. Delphine Jones made her debut as a Leader in Running Fitness and was joined by Neil Lloyd, Kath Jervis, Bernie Monk, Gareth Williams and Lee Phillips.

Police Sport UK 10 Mile Race

Ian Munro travelled to a blowy Lee-on-Solent on Wednesday to compete in the Police Sport UK 10 Mile race. Ian was running as part of the Gwent Police Running Section and finished in a cracking time of 01:11:00.

Sian’s First Half Marathon

Sian McGoldrick is will soon be joining the half marathon club after she registered to run the Anglesey Half Marathon in March 2018. She’s chosen a great place for her first HM with the route heading over the Menai Suspension Bridge and then following the coast to Beaumaris Castle and back.

Stephen’s Torture Session Deep Tissue Massage

Stephen Carter found himself with a bad case of the DOMS in his legs just a few days before a race after running a little too quickly down a steep hill. Julie Cashell came to the rescue with a torture session deep tissue massage.

Testing out the new XC Course

Clive Cooksey took a group on our new cross country course in preparation for the start of the GLCL XC season on October 8th. It was wet and muddy, just what you’d expect for cross country.

parkrun

With a number of races taking place this weekend there was only a single PB to report at PBB which was Ethan Sayce at 20:18. Tourists this week were Ceri Caswell in Weymouth whilst supporting Damian, Lee Griffiths in Newpor, James Ashley in Cardiff, Robert King in Merthyr and Derek Rainbird in Penallta.

C25K Graduates

There were a couple more C25K this week and we’re hoping that they continue to run and join the First Strides.

Welsh Road Relay Championships: Pembrey

The Welsh Road Relay Championship took place in Pembrey and the Green Army were out in force – literally! We had numerous comments about how many of us were there. With 13 teams we were a force to be reckoned with and came away with a gold, 2 silver and a bronze medal.

Everyone stepped up to the plate and gave it their all when it came to running their leg and as a result so many members secured a 5K PB. This just shows how hard every member did.

  • Gavin Patterson – 17:38
  • Josh Cashell – 18:42
  • James Thomas – 19:56
  • Neil Beynon: 20:38
  • Gareth Williams – 21:13
  • Sarah Jeremiah: 22:32
  • Stephen Dallow: 22:34
  • Beth Jones: 23:00
  • Claire Sullivan – 23:44
  • Bobbie Swift: 23:54
  • Alison Holton: 24:56
  • Suzie Tew – 24:58
  • Liz Beynon: 25:13
  • Laura Hire: 25:14
  • Darren Swift – 26:08

Mic Morris 10K

We were out in force for the annual Mic Morris 10K race with over 40 runners participating some of whom were wearing the infamous green vest for the first time including Liz-Carpenter Davies who took the photo below.

Notable results for the race were Lee Aherne who took 2nd position in 32:25, Nicola Jukes who took 3rd lady and Nicola Jukes, Julie Cashell and Danielle Phillips who together won the award for the ladies team. There were plenty of PBs but unfortunately are not recognised by Welsh Athletics due to the nature of the course but I did notice that Darren and Cerys Swift both beat their time for last year by 16 minutes which shows how much she they’ve improved over the last 12 months. However, like last year, Cerys still beat her dad. And despite the PBs not being recognised, a lot of members felt boosted by the times they did run.

Wentwood Woodlark

I had mistakenly called this race the Wentwood Windup in the pre-weekend race post instead of the Wentwood Woodlark. Based on today’s race I’m planning on starting a petition to get the name changed!

It was tough, scenic, muddy, wet and hilly but had some great technical sections, some fast downhills tracks and many opportunities to fall over! Owen Davies chose this as his first race for the club and thankfully he’s experience with muddy courses so it hasn’t put him off.

Starting Video

Weymouth Ironman 70.3

Damian Caswell and Marc Bloomfield were in Weymouth for the Ironman 70.3 on Sunday. Damian completed the race in 05:50:37

Newent Sprint Triathlon

Dave Kempton (and his son) and Stephen Williams competed in the sprint triathlon in Newent on Sunday under the Team Jolly banner. They were all supported by James Ashley and Gareth Williams.

Great Bristol Half Marathon

Kathryn Price was flying the flag for the Green Army at the Great Bristol Half Marathon on Sunday. This was an event that was on her racing bucket list – have you made a bucket list?

Rother Valley 10K

Stephen Carter and Ruth Butterfield headed over to East Sussex for the Rother Valley 10K and Stephen had more in mind than simply running the race. He surprised Ruth with a marriage proposal at the finish line, and whilst both still wearing green vests! [Video]

Whitewater Rafting

Lauren and her mum were having a break from running this weekend with a whitewater rafting trip in North Wales.

Run for Rebecca

Vests on Tour

Malia, Crete

Barely 24 hours into her holiday in Crete, Alex Thomas was out running in her Green Vest.

Ruthin

Not sure if the lights are green in the hot tub that Lauren and her mum are in or if the vests are just turning the water green.

Race Numbers

Cardiff Half Marathon

A number of members, myself included, have been receiving their numbers for this year’s Cardiff Half Marathon. Should be a great club race.

Next Week’s Races

If you aren’t heading to Swansea for the 10K race and need another race before the Cardiff Half there’s the Big Dipper 10K in Ross-on-Wye.
